1

Stable Foundation

Target Budget: $5,400 per month / $32,700 in reserve

Our vision is to organize a hyperlocal conversation — monthly gathering of neighbors to explore ways to improve walkability where they live — in every single neighborhood in Dallas. This ambitious vision requires a core team focused every day on finding and coordinating volunteers and leaders across the city. At this stage, every dollar goes toward:

  • First full-time staffer to manage daily operations; facilitate new hyplerlocal conversations; coordinate volunteers; and handle communications between the nonprofit, volunteers, members, and partner orgs.
  • Insurance coverage for our board of directors, staff, volunteers, and members participating in activities organized by Dallas Urbanists, including hyperlocal conversations.
  • Operational expenses including printing, event supplies, software licenses, and legal fees.
Stage
2

Cultural Influence

Target Budget: $11,600 per month / $70,000 in reserve

To accelerate our growth and expand our reach, we aim to increase daily production of educational content, which will complement and aid our hyperlocal conversations, and collaborate more frequently with local partners. Your donations will support:

  • Second full-time staffer to produce daily, original educational content and coordinate creative inputs from volunteers.
  • "Urbanists HQ": Leasing office space for creative work, volunteer workshops, and community meetings, ideally located near public colleges for internship opportunities. This shared space would be downtown or nearby.
Stage
3

Permanent Institution

Target Budget: $22,500 per month / $153,000 in reserve

Our vision is for Dallas Urbanists to become a household name and the go-to resource for practical guidance on all matters related to local urbanism. We also want to be a role model for sustainable advocacy by showing the same care for our staff’s well-being that we show for our city.

  • Full-time employees: Like most nonprofits with a tight budget, we initially rely on independent contractors for our staffing needs. We plan to provide employee benefits and fair compensation as we grow. This approach nurtures the bond between our team and the larger community, retains institutional knowledge, and supports staff at any stage of life, whether they're paying down student loans, buying a home, or raising a family.
  • Expanding capacity at Urbanists HQ: Our goal is to create a resource center for the whole urbanism community. Early on, the capacity at our space will be limited by budget, size, and equipment. As we grow, we aim to host more activities, including podcasts, video shoots, livestreams, and fundraisers, in a suitably sized and equipped space.

Agent of Change

Target Budget: TBD

When we formed our nonprofit, most advocacy groups only had capacity to react to change, rather than be proactive. Our vision is instead of waiting for DART to propose service changes, neighborhoods are proactively planning and requesting new and improved routes; instead of waiting on the city to propose painted bike lanes, residents are demanding protected ones; instead of mobilizing against proposed skyscrapers, locals push community-led plans for incremental density.

Our board has yet to develop a budget for this growth phase. When we do, some items we may consider include:

  • Major campaigns and initiatives: early on, Dallas Urbanists creates value through hyperlocal conversations and educational content. Each HLC group drives initiatives like walk audits, road diets, Crash Analysis Studios, community area plans, rezoning requests, and intersection redesigns. As we grow, we aspire to lead city-wide initiatives.
  • Scholarship programs
  • Paid internships
  • Leadership training programs
  • Documentaries & video series
  • Kickstarting local conversations in other North Texas cities outside Dallas.
  • Stock cost-efficient, ethically-sourced merchandise
